CBSE Class 10 exams cancelled and Class 12 board exams postponed: Department of Education
Coimbatore: The Department of Education announced on Wednesday in a press release that the CBSE Class 10 board exams that were scheduled to begin on May 4 have been cancelled and board exams for Class 12 have been postponed. The decision was announced after a meeting held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Education Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ as well as other important officials. The meeting was held to discuss cancellation of examinations due to the recent surge of COVID cases in the country.
The PM is of the opinion thatstudents' well-being is paramount to the Government and assured that the Centre would ensure that their health is taken care of first, without their academics affected. The Education Minister said that Class 10 students will be promoted on the basis of their internal assessment marks.
The Education Department reiterated that any candidate who is not satisfied with the marks allotted to him/her, will be given an opportunity to write their exams when conditions are conducive for the same.
Class 12 exams that have been postponed will be held after the situation is reviewed on June 1. The Education Department assured students that a minimum notice of at least 15 days will be given before the start of the examinations. For schools under the ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) Board, a decision is yet to be announced.
The meeting with the PM was held following demands by parents to cancel board exams owing to the surge of COVID-19 cases in India. Delhi reported over 13,500 cases in a span of 24 hours on Tuesday. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asked the Centre to cancel board exams for classes 10 and 12. He appealed to the Central Government to explore alternative methods of assessing students, including online exams. Soon after the decision was announced on Wednesday, Kejriwal took to Twitter to appreciate the PM and Education Department's decision.
Congress Twitter handle also joined in congratulating PM Modi on the bold decision. Earlier, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had also urged the Centre to cancel board exams. Punjab Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh had also written to the Centre seeking for the postponement of board exams for Classes 10 and 12.
