No new judge has been appointed since the retirement of the Judge Balachandran.
Coimbatore: The District Consumer Court is functioning on the premises of the Coimbatore District Collector's Office. There is a judge (chairman), two members and officers. Balachandran, who was a judge at the court, had retired three months ago. No new judge has been appointed since then. Thus many cases have been put on hold, awaiting judgments.
According to Consumer Court sources, "Coimbatore Consumer Court which was functioning in a "Forum" method has been transformed into a 'commission' since June 25th, 2020. The court earlier had the power to issue compensation only up to Rs 20 lakhs, but now it has been given the power to order compensation up to Rs 1 crore. Hence around 40 new cases were registered every month and 30 cases were heard."
Balachandran, who was a judge at this court retired three months ago. Since then, no new judge has been appointed. Cases that are therefore pending are awaiting the appointment of a new judge.
"Due to the election date announcement, the appointment of a new judge was postponed. The number of newly registered cases after the spread of the disease has decreased slightly.
However, various cases already pending have been investigated and many cases have progressed to the stage of adjudication. Judgment will be given one by one as soon as the new judge takes charge, ” said the District Consumer Court sources.
