Public, shops and other economic establishments in the city were fined for not wearing masks and breaking other safety rules that had been made mandatory to prevent COVID-19 infections from spreading.
As many as 35 organizations in North Coimbatore were fined Rs. 13,700 for flouting COVID-19 guidelines, while 36 shops in East Zone were levied a fine of Rs. 7,100. In the Central Zone, the Corporation has collected a whopping Rs. 26,000 from 132 people who had not been wearing masks. The overall amount thus collected by the Corporation as fines amounts to Rs. 80,400 rupees.
The Municipal Corporation has made it compulsory for public and establishments to adhere to the rules and guidelines stipulated last year, after the outbreak of COVID-19 to prevent the infections from spreading. A minimum amount of Rs. 200 was announced as fine for non-adherence to any of the stipulated guidelines.
Last year, the Tamil Nadu Governor, Panwarilal Purohit promulgated the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act, 1939 (second amendment) ordinance 2020 that made violations against COVID-19 lockdown and physical distancing norms a compoundable offence.
Following the Act, Corporation officials have been diligently levying fines on violators with regard to COVID-19 safety measures.
