Coimbatore: The Gothawadi Pond Conservation organisation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with German multinational company Eppinger Tooling Asia which has been exploring avenues for funding the restoration and rejuvenation of pond banks, including Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The Public Work Department will soon carry out the process after due approval and as per guidelines. According to social activist, Shanmugasundaram from Gothawadi Pond Conservation organisation, "The lake is spread across 350 acres, 32 panchayats and connects Coimbatore and Pollachi for about 40 kms, with this being the big water conservation area in between.

About 1.5 to 2 lakh people are benefited. The pond gets filled by rain water and by the PAP main canal. When the lake gets filled, the entire ecosystem will be changed. The state government had cleaned the lake three years ago, however, it has been left unattended since then," opined Shanmugasundaram.

A senior retired PWD staff opined on condition of anonymity that the CSR might not get the expected result. "In the recent past, it has been evident that CSR did not yield the expected result. I have worked within the department for the last few years in Chennai and have studied a lot about lakes in the city. Comparing such incidents, I assume the CSR might not get the expected result."

On behalf of the voluntary organization 'RAAC,' Secretary Raveendran, Gothawadi Pond Conservation Organization's social activist Shanmugasundaram, volunteers Sundararaj, Ilangovan, Sadanandam and Chenniyappan and on behalf of Koushika Neer Karangal Kootamaipu, Sivarajah were present during the signing of the MoU.
