Police brutality in Coimbatore creates panic since cops were seen attacking public in Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: In a restaurant situated near Gandhipuram Bus Stand in Coimbatore, a group of travellers from Hosur and the public were dining at 10:15 PM. The Tamil Nadu government has allowed 50% of occupancy and time limit till 11 PM for shops and restaurants to function due to COVID-19 restrictions.But the police entered the restaurant, attacked the customers and the workers for violating the COVID-19 rules.
This has caused panic among the public in Coimbatore. Condemning this, Kamal Haasan, the MNM party founder and Coimbatore South candidate has tweeted. He has said, "Government's rule is to not to operate restaurant and shops after 11 pm, but police officials arrived at a shop in Gandhipuram, Coimbatore and attacked people who were eating around 10.15 pm. Is this a reminder of the Sathankulam incident? It is the duty of the state administration to respond."
This tweet is spreading fast on social websites. Meanwhile, this incident has received strong condemnation from many political party leaders.
Yesterday, Passengers and travellers were having dinner at a restaurant in the Gandhipuram Bus Stand area in Coimbatore at 10.15 pm yesterday when the shutters of the hotel were kept lowered as the shop was about to close. Cops who came to the restaurant asked the restaurant owner to shut down saying that Inspector Latha was on patrol.
Shortly afterwards, Inspector Latha and Kattoor Sub-Inspector Muthu arrived at the hotel where 4 women and more than 8 men were eating at the shop and attacked them. In this incident, 3 of them were seriously injured and a woman was injured in the head. The incident caused a stir at night.
CCTV footage of the attack began to spread rapidly on social media. Following that, the hotel owner filed a complaint with City Police Commissioner Davidson Devasirvatham today, following which Sub-Inspector Muthu was immediately transferred and posted to the police control room.
Now, the Coimbatore Deputy Commissioner has started the investigation on the orders of the Commissioner of Police.
