Karthik MLA condemns police attack at a restaurant in Gandhipuram

The video of police SI attacking people in a restaurant from Gandhipuram has gone viral.

Coimbatore: Due to the spread of Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu, restaurants and tea shops are allowed to function only with 50% of customers. Tamil Nadu government has also restricted the shops to be open only till 11 PM. This restriction came into effect on April 10th 2021.

In this situation, a few travellers from Hosur were dining at the restaurant owned by Mohanraj near the Coimbatore Gandhipuram bus stand on April 11th at 10.20 PM.

Sub Inspector of Police Muthu, who was in the area at the time, cited Covid-19 restrictions as a reason and attacked the people who were eating along with the workers in the shop.

Several people, including a woman, were injured during this attack. It is said that the cop intimidated the shop owner to close the shop after 10 PM. The release of the CCTV footage has caused shock across Tamil Nadu.

Singanallur MLA Karthik has strongly condemned the incident where the SI attacked customers and also threatened them to close the shop when restaurants are allowed to operate with up to 50 per cent of the population until 11 PM.

"On behalf of Coimbatore East District DMK, I request the government to conduct a proper investigation into the incident, register a case and take stern action against the SI who acted unethically," Karthik said.

The SI has been transferred after the incident took place. The restaurant owner has also submitted a petition to District Collector to take strict actions against such treatment of police.
