Chennai: Around 337 Tamil Nadu police officials deceased in the last year and a total of 27 cops have passed away from January 2021 till March 2021.
Recent statistics show that there is 1 cop in every 632 people who have deceased in the state.
Tamil Nadu police department is the 5th largest in the country with 1.5 police officials making a total of 1.13 lakh members so far. Including 198 All women's police stations, there are a total of 1,500 police stations in Tamil Nadu.There are 13 departments in the police department excluding the law and order department. Four organizations function in Tamil Nadu to train the police officials.
In that, a special department named the Police Welfare Board functions to look into the welfare of Tamil Nadu cops.
Recently, the number of deaths in the police department has increased as they are overburdened with work and there is no outlet for them to get help. The numbers are high in deaths due to stress and have considerably increased due to health imbalance.
Around 108 police officials died last year due to health ailments, 59 of heart attack, 70 of accidents, 48 of suicide, 40 of COVID-19, 1 of murder, 9 of cancer and 2 of duty, bringing the total deaths of police officials last year to 337.
