Police brutality on public in Coimbatore MP P R Natarajan requests City Commissioner to initiate further action against transferred police officer involved in the assault

Coimbatore: Coimbatore MP P R Natarajan has strongly condemned the assault on public at a restaurant in Gandhipuram area by a Sub-Inspector. The police official reportedly attacked diners on Sunday night, who had just arrived from Hosur, including women alleging that they did not follow pandemic protocols.

MP P R Natarajan issued a press release in this regard stating that, "It is shocking to know about the attack by a police officer on public, including women who were eating at a restaurant near Gandhipuram, Coimbatore. Not more than 6 people were there at the hotel at the time of the police attack which was around 10 pm.

The Government has allowed hotels to function till 11 pm with a 50 percent seating limit. Such police brutality must be strongly condemned. Even in the case of violating Covid-19 protocols, a proper fine must be levied rather than lathi charging the public. Who gave the police permission to do this? The attack even on women and children without considering that they are having a meal. I strongly condemn this behaviour," he reprimanded.

"This is not acceptable. We have received information that the Sub Inspector involved in this violation has been transferred to another department but this is not enough and it looks more like a damage control effort. The officer involved in the attack acted against the law and he must be charged immediately for his actions. I urge the District Police Commissioner to take immediate action regarding this brutal attack on innocent people," demanded P R Natarajan.
