Bharathiar University to turn into a COVID-19 care centre, along with two more premises in Coimbatore due to the increase of infection in the city.

Coimbatore: The Bharathiar University in Coimbatore, along with Karunya Group of Institutions are under preparations to prepare for quarantine-come-care centres for COVID-19 positive patients.

Earlier this week, Corporation Commissioner Kumaravel Pandian said that due to the spike in cases, these two universities and Codissa Trade Complex will be transformed into COVID-19 Care centres to cater for patients.

"As the daily cases in the district are skyrocketing, the corporation officials along with health department staffs are pacing up actions to curb the spread. In a bid to monitor the positive patients, both the departments had arranged three places as emerging Covid care centres. Codissia, Karunya University and Bharathiar university are proposed to be emerging centres," he informed the public.

Corporation Commissioner also said, "Patients with hypertension, diabetes and found to have infected with mutant variants are more likely to be administered under treatment at these Covid care centres besides others."

However, the officials did not disclose the number of availability of beds at each centre. Also, they have instructed the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital to ramp up the availability of beds.

“To avoid overflow and complaints about lack of bed facilities, we have undertaken these steps,” said Kumaravel Pandian while addressing the press.

When we contacted Bharathiar University for comments, the management agreed and said the process to change the hostels as COVID-19 care centres are underway. However, the management refused to permit journalists to visit the spot citing strict order from the higher officials.
