Case pertaining to death of electrocuted elephant has been transferred to CBI
Coimbatore: The case pertaining to the death of an electrocuted male elephant in Sathyamangalam Hasanur Forest Reserve has been transferred to the CBI.
On December 19, 2020, a male elephant was found dead in the Sathyamangalam Hasanur Forest Reserve, inJeeraka Valli village in Erode district. Forest officials and veterinarians examined the elephant to ascertain the cause of death and found that the elephant had died due to electrocution.
During the investigation, it came to be known that Mathappa (36) of Arulwadi village near Thalavadi and his father Kalaiyya (65) had erected an electric fence to prevent wildlife from entering their farm. They had used hooks to connect to the wires in the electric pole to electrify the fence. The male elephant was electrocuted when it entered the farm at night.
The Forest Department had registered a case against Madhappa and Kalaiyya in this regard. Both were placed on bail and a case was filed at the Chennai High Court seeking a CBI inquiry. On February 10, the trial court ordered the CBI to probe the case of the death of the male elephant which had been electrocuted to death. The CBI Special Investigation DSP, Santosh Kumar is currently investigating the case.
