BJP candidate Vanathi Srinivasan created a furore for wearing a 'lotus' badge at polling booth
Coimbatore: With voting for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections underway in full swing since 7 am this morning, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, celebrities along with the common man have been casting their votes in their respective constituencies.
The BJP-AIADMK alliance candidate, Vanathi Srinivasan who is contesting from Coimbatore South constituency registered her vote at her constituency polling station. She was later accused of violating the EC's code of conduct since she was wearing a 'lotus' badge.
According to the Code of Conduct for Elections, the election symbol should not be carried within 100 meters of the polling station. As per the rules of conduct for the election, no one in the area is allowed to campaign for votes within 100 meters too. But the fact that Vanathi Srinivasan voted wearing her party's Lotus symbol has caused a furore among other parties.
Jayakumar, a Congress candidate demanded that Vanathi Srinivasan be disqualified immediately as per the code of conduct.
Replying to a media query, the Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo said that after receiving a formal complaint, the Election Officer of the constituency would investigate and take necessary action.
