Coimbatore: While the people are concerned about fulfilling their democratic duty, they are even more concerned to take selfies with their inked fingers. Many of the voters were seen forgetting their concern about environmental protection and health.
As the turnout for the 2021 Assembly elections is brisk across the state since this morning, the interest shown by most people in performing their democratic duty and taking selfies has not been the same when it comes to protecting environment and health.
Various safety and precautionary measures on behalf of the Election Commission have been taken to make sure that the public cast their votes safely today. The voters got their temperature checked and were then given sanitizers and gloves at their respective polling stations to perform their democratic duty.
In a few places of Coimbatore, the voters who were so eager to cast their votes were not so considerate about safety and threw the plastic gloves at random places inside the polling station. A few even took off their masks and tossed it away with no concern about their health nor the environment.
It can be seen that people were more interested in filming their ink mark than being a responsible citizen. It is imperative that everyone acts with personal responsibility despite the various security measures taken on behalf of the Election Commission.
One of the professors from the social work department said that "the precautionary measures were aimed at controlling the spread of Covid-19 infection. The provision of gloves is a measure that is most welcomed but it would have been better if it was not a plastic gloves."
He also added, "public can be seen throwing away gloves without any regard for the environment. Many say that there were not enough dustbins at the polling stations but it should be our duty to throw them away properly. It is of great concern especially when Covid-19 is on the rise. The expectation is that in the future, all people should be more concerned about health and environmental protection."
