Congress candidate Mayura Jayakumar protests after Congress cadres catch BJP members red-handed for issuing tokens in R K Nagar constituency.
Coimbatore: With voting for the Coimbatore Assembly elections in full swing since 7 am today, there was tension in Sullivan Street in Coimbatore when Congress cadres nabbed BJP members who were issuing tokens in the hands of voters who had queued up cast their votes in the Sullivan Street area of Coimbatore.
Over the past few days, there have been various allegations that candidates, especially from the AIADMK-BJP alliance were distributing cash to the voters.
Coimbatore South DMK alliance candidate Mayura Jayakumar staged a road blockade condemning election officials for not taking any action against those issuing tokens even after lodging a complaint. It is reported that Congress workers surrounded the BJP cadres, grabbed them by the hand and confiscated the tokens. It is to be noted that such token are generally issued as receipt of payment upon completion of votes.
The Naam Tamilar Party candidate also joined Mayura Jayakumar in support of the protest against fraudulent electoral practices. The protest is still on with a demand that immediate action must be taken. This has caused a stir in the Sullivan Street area where polling is on.
