Coimbatore: The Coimbatore District Construction Organization and Joint Action Committee of Unorganised Workers Association have released a press release stating their reason behind supporting the DMK party in the upcoming elections.
Coordinators of the organization G Murugesan and N Selvaraj released this report which stated, "The BJP government has abolished the labour security law that was received after over hundred years of struggle. They have abandoned the Central Construction Workers Protection Act, which was enacted in 1996 after a long struggle. BJP party's Central Government has taken away all the state approvals of the Construction Workers Welfare Boards and taken them to Delhi."
The statement also mentioned that the election manifesto released by the AIADMK party, they did not promise an extension of the construction industry workers and unorganised worker's welfare boards to the state list and also did not increase the subsidies.
"At the last welfare meeting held on 16th September 2019, the AIADMK government passed a unanimous resolution to provide scholarships to their children for construction workers registered in the presence of the Minister on the basis of the Supreme Court decision. No one has been awarded a scholarship for the past two years," the unions accused.
It was also written that the AIADMK government has failed to curb the severe delays in the approval of business premises, apartment complexes, offices and houses and the rise in prices of construction materials in order to paralyze the construction industry.
Hence, the construction union along with the unorganised worker's association have decided to boycott the BJP and AIADMK alliance in the state assembly elections.
Accepting the demands of the Trade Unions, DMK has guaranteed to revise and improve the welfare boards of unorganised workers and has also promised to increase subsidy and provide medical assistance.
They later explained, "As the private sector syndicate artificially raises the price of construction materials and the construction industry is completely affected and workers are on the edge of losing their jobs, DMK has promised to bring construction materials under the Essential Materials Act to control the rise in prices. DMK has also promised to draw a single authorisation to ease building permission and to change the stamp duty measure which will help ordinary people repair the defects and build a house."
Therefore, the statement concluded with a message which showed support to the DMK led alliance. "We must all work together to support and win the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam led alliance to ensure the livelihood of workers," it stated.
The districts in Tamil Nadu will face the 2021 assembly elections tomorrow.
