Action should be taken against Minister SP Velumani and party for blatantly violating election norms by distributing gifts after announcement of election date: DMK MLA N. Karthik

Coimbatore: DMK MLA N. Karthik urges that action should be taken against Minister SP Velumani and party for blatantly violating election norms by distributing gifts after announcement of election date. The Election Commissioner of India announced yesterday evening that the forthcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu will be held on April 6. Following this, the state-wide code of conduct came into force immediately.

Following the enactment of the Code of Conduct for Elections, AIADMK executives today, on the orders of Minister SP Velumani, went door-to-door in several places in the Coimbatore and Singanallur assembly constituencies to distribute 500 rupees in cash, a dhoti, a saree and a plate worth 200 rupees. The Chief Electoral Commissioner said yesterday that stern action would be taken to prevent the distribution of cash and gift items during the upcoming legislative elections.

DMK MLA N. Karthik said,"But in Coimbatore, the AIADMK, led by Minister SP Velumani, is blatantly violating the code of conduct by giving away gifts. The ruling party has violated all the rules. But despite knowing about the ruling party's abuses, the district administration and the police, who are supposed to prevent this are turning a bllind eye. No case has been registered so far regarding these violations. I strongly condemn this on behalf of the Coimbatore East District DMK. Minister SVelumani, who was active in committing corruption in the Smart City projects and tenders during the Coronavirus period and turning a blind towards people affected by the coronavirus without food and without giving any reliefis now acting and trying to fool people by giving them gifts and getting votes after the election was announced today."

He added that, "For the past ten years, the people have been watching the AIADMK government's administrative irregularities, which have failed to provide any basic amenities to the people, including roads, drinking water and sanitation. Now that the election has been announced, the ruling party is trying to deceive the people by giving gifts. In the forthcoming assembly elections, the people will teach the AIADMK a lesson. Therefore, the district administration and the Election Commission must ensure that the election is conducted honestly and without buying votes. I urge you to file a case against the ruling party for committing election irregularities and take appropriate action against the same."
