Coimbatore: His tryst with paintings began when he was as young as five years old, today, 27-year old Vigneshraj R., is introduced as the only artist from Coimbatore who has won the prestigious State Award from the International Institute of Tamil Studies for his painting titled ‘Nalam Punainthuraithal’ that depicts Chapter- 112; Kural 1111 -1120.
The award was handed over to the artist at a function organised at the International Institute of Tamil Studies in Chennai, yesterday (on Wednesday). He received the award from K. Pandiarajan, Minister for Tamil language, Tamil Culture and Archaeology.

Of the 438 paintings that were received from artists from across the state, 15 best entries were selected and Vigneshraj’s work of art was one of them.
Having returned from the state capital after receiving the award, the youth artist from Coimbatore, in a candid conversation with SimpliCity opens up about his love for art. “I am a full time artist and I have chosen this as a career. I have no regrets in making my passion, my profession.” Vigneshraj begins.
Currently, he serves as Assistant Professor at the Lalit Kalakshetra, Raviraj College of Fine Arts where he has been teaching art for the last six years. In between work and managing an art gallery that he owns in Saravanampatti, the young artist took time off his routine and worked on the piece of art that bagged him the state award.
Throwing light on the effort that went behind the painting, the artist shares that he wanted to give regular subjects, social causes and the likes a break. “I wanted to experiment with the less worked on theme and at the same time, I wanted to be innovative and creative.” he tells us.
His out-of-the-box thinking has surely paid off, as it reflects in his paintings. In the painting, which is acrylic painting on stretch canvas and measures three feet in height and two feet in width, Vigneshraj has used just three hues and mixed and matched them to create more colours.
“The aim was to bring in a balance in colours and harmony in the work. I have used colours namely permanent pink, white laced with metallic pink and a not so widely shade of blue.” Vigneshraj recalls. From creating the sketch on paper to bringing out the final output on canvas, the transformation has truly been laudable and award winning.
“As an artist, I am satisfied at the outcome of the work of art. The fact that I am the only person from Coimbatore who has received the award is like a feather on the cap.” he sums it up.
As part of his future plans, Vigneshraj has a unique concept in mind which he regards will help him etch his name in the Guinness Book of World Records. Tight lipped about the same, he assures us that this attempt will materialise before this year ends. On the academic front, the young artist is thinking of pursuing his PhD.
Currently, Vigneshraj is counting the days to open the doors of his art gallery which is located in Saravanampatti here. “Due to the pandemic, the gallery was temporarily closed and in a couple of months from now, it will be open to visitors.” he tells us.
The art gallery christened Artrendz was declared open on March 8th in 2020. 80 women inaugurated the art gallery. The gallery till date has hosted as many as 12 shows on various themes and subjects.
