Contractors in Coimbatore request EC to grant permission for them to carry money to pay wages to workers

Coimbatore Corporation Contractors Welfare Association President Udayakumar and Secretary KCP Chandraprakash have requested the Election Commission to allow contractors to take money to provide wages for workers.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore Corporation Contractors Welfare Association President Udayakumar and Secretary KCP Chandraprakash have requested the Election Commission to allow contractors to take money to provide wages for workers.

With the forthcoming assembly elections in Tamilnadu, the date of the elections has been announced todaywhich will make it impossible to carry more than a certain amount of cash as per the rules of conduct by the Election Commission.

Meanwhile, Smart City and other government projects like smart city works, roads, bridges, drinking water pipelines, rainwater drainage and various government projects are underway not only in Coimbatore but even in other districts in Tamilnadu. Labourers working for contractors are required to pay weekly wages.

Election Commission officials are likely to be subject to action when money is taken to pay the workers by contractors. Therefore, contractors should be exempted from carrying cash during the election period to pay the wages based on their annual 'turnover'. In particular, they demanded that the money be taken from the bank with proper documents and allowed to be given to the workers.

Contractors gave a petition which requested the Election Commission “to grant contractors working for Rs 2 crores per annum should be allowed to carry Rs 2 lakhs per week, contractors working for Rs 5 crores should be allowed to carry Rs 5 lakhs. Companies making turnover of Rs 10 crore per annum should be allowed to carry Rs 10 lakhs per week and companies whose turnover is over Rs 10 crores should be allowed to carry upto Rs 15 lakh.“

The petition also stated that “If the EC does not comply with this demand, livelihoods of labourers will be affected heavily. Which will also delay the tasks under process. We kindly request the Election Commission to assist the contracting companies in making an exception.”
