SIHS Colony flyover on hold for 10 years; DMK will organise a protest against this in Coimbatore - Na Karthik MLA

During the reign of former Chief Minister Kalaignar Karunanidhi in 2010, a budget of Rs 25 crores was allocated for the construction of the flyover connecting SIHS Colony with Ondipudur in Coimbatore.

Coimbatore: DMK Coimbatore East Secretary Karthik MLA spoke at a press conference in Coimbatore today, where he said that DMK along with the public will go on a series of protests if the SIHS overpass work which is put on hold for 10 years is completed soon.

In his address DMK MLA Kathik stated that “During the reign of former Chief Minister Kalaignar Karunanidhi in 2010, a budget of Rs 25 crores was allocated for the construction of the flyover connecting SIHS Colony with Ondipudur in Coimbatore. With the commencement of basic works there was a government change in Tamilnadu and the Highways Department continued their work without consulting the land owners.

As a result, the Tamilnadu government has put the bridge construction work on hold for 10 years after the landowners obtained a restraining order from the court.”

Then, on behalf of DMK party,MLA Karthik N said that “Thousands of people living in the SIHS colony area could not go to work or to schools-colleges due to the incomplete work of the flyover. The roads are so bad that even an ambulance cannot go in case of emergencies.”

He then said that DMK will soon organise a protest in Coimbatore by mobilizing the public. MLA Karthik then said that he had raised his voice regarding this issue for three consecutive years at the assembly.

“In view of this situation, DMK alliance parties and social activists have waged several phased struggles. On 27.10.17 a protest was staged on behalf of the DMK to blockade the office of the District Collector, which also happened on 06.01.2017 and 07.06.2019.

In this situation, on 07.01.2020, the Chennai High Court ruled that the issue should be resolved immediately and within ten weeks, following the order of the court, the Tamilnadu government has to pay the compensation to the landowners and should immediately start the work.”

He further stated that the Tamilnadu government has not taken any action on the issue for almost an year now and said that the highway sector is in the hands of CM Palanisamy, who has been the head of the current government.

Coimbatore East DMK Secretary Karthik MLA then stated that “TN government must take immediate actions to complete these tasks decisively and actively. If not, DMK will hold a series of protests along with the people of SIHS Colony.”
