Coimbatore: N. Karthik MLA in a press meet said if the SIHS overpass is not completed soon, there will be a series of protests on behalf of the DMK. During the tenure of former Chief Minister Karunanidhi in 2010, the construction of the railway flyover connecting SIHS Colony-Ondipudur was allotted. Coimbatore East District Officer of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MLA N. Karthik accused that due the change of government in 2011 after the commencement of basic works, the then Government of Tamil Nadu and the Highways Department continued their work without holding talks with the landowners.
He accused tens of thousands of people living in the SIHS colony area could not go to work without proper transport facilities, could not go to school-college, and the roads were so bad that even an ambulance could not go in an emergency. If they are not rectified soon there will be a protest on behalf of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam."
He further added that after his election as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, he would continue to speak on the issue for three consecutive years at the Legislature and the Grant Debate. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, comrade parties and social activists have waged several phased struggles. On 27.10.17 we staged a protest on behalf of the DMK to blockade the office of the District Collector and last, on 06.01.2017 and 07.06.2019. The judgment of the Chennai High Court dated 07.01.2020 stated that the issue should be resolved immediately and within ten weeks. As per court order the Government of Tamil Nadu should pay the amount due to the landlords and start the work.
He further added that after he became a MLA he continued to speak on the issue for three consecutive years at the Legislature. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and social activists indulged in several phased protests. On 27.10.17 they staged a protest on behalf of the DMK to lay siege to the office of the District Collector and last, on 06.01.2017 and 07.06.2019.
On 07.01.2020, the Chennai High Court ruled that the issue should be resolved immediately and within ten weeks. As per the court, the Tamil Nadu government should pay the landlords the compensation due to them and start the work. But it has been a year and to date the Tamil Nadu government has not taken any action on the issue. He further said that the highway sector is in the hands of CM Edappadi Palanisamy, who is acting as a puppet.
He warned saying, "This government must take action to complete these tasks decisively and actively. Or else very soon, the Coimbatore District DMK will hold a series of large-scale protests on behalf of the DMK Coimbatore East."
