So the public going to other districts are suffering. Private buses are carrying as many people as they can and are raising their fares on their own wish causing the public to suffer. Only 30 percent of government buses are in operation. As the transport workers' strike continues for a second day, only 20 to 30 per cent of buses are operating in Coimbatore.
The unions held talks with officials, including the transport minister, last month, emphasizing various demands, including pay rises and permanent employment for temporary workers. The unions announced an indefinite strike from yesterday, as no consensus was reached in those talks.
As many as 3,000 city buses and 1,500 suburban buses ply in the Coimbatore division, while only 700 local and suburban buses operated yesterdaydue to a strike by transport workers. As the transport workers' struggle continues for a second day, only 20 to 30 percent of government buses operate today.
