13 arrested for selling tobacco products in Coimbatore
Coimbatore: 13 arrested for selling tobacco products in Coimbatore. In the areas around Coimbatore, the sale of tobacco, gutka and pan parak, which are banned by the Tamil Nadu government, is on the rise. In the suburbs of Coimbatore, tobacco products are regularly smuggled in lorries and minivans which are found during frequent police raids. When a lorry was stopped and inspected while on duty by the police at a check post in Saravanampatti area a few days ago it was revealed that tobacco, gutka, pan parak, etc. were being smuggled. The driver was immediately arrested and interrogated.
Police asked him to take them to godown in Saravanampatti area. Upon inspecting the godown it was revealed that there were tons of gutka goods hidden there to be split and sent to stores for retail sale. Following that, the nacotics police sealed the godown.
Action is being taken by the Coimbatore City police action to inspect for the banned tobacco products in all petti shops selling tobacco products in Coimbatore. Yesterday in Coimbatore they conducted raids in Chetty Road, VCV Road, RG Road, Town Hall, Puliyakulam, Chettipalayam Road and LG Nagar. Police arrested 13 people for selling banned tobacco products and confiscated 210 packets of tobacco from the shops.
