Coimbatore: Sekkilutha Semmal VOC’s granddaughter protests against placing of Karunanidhi statue next to her grandad in Coimbatore. The statue of V. O Chidambaram Pillai is located in Madurai. Arrangements are being made to erect a statue of the late Chief Minister artist Karunanidhi near it.
In this regard, V. O Chidambaram's granddaughter has petitioned not to erect a statue of Karunanidhi. V.O Chidambaran was hailed as a 'Kappalottiya Tamilan' for opposing the British rule and running his own shipping business as a rival, and for being imprisoned for it. A statue of him has been erected at Simmakkal, Madurai, in his memory.
It is planned to unveil a statue of the late Chief Minister Karunanidhi near his statue. In the petition it was stated that, "V. O Chidambaram was the one who fought for the independence of the country and sacrificed his entire life. Setting up a statue of a political leader near his statue would be a disgrace to his reputation and sacrifice. Moreover, taking this as the wrong example, there is a chance for setting up statues for political leaders will occur near the statues of other martyrs. Therefore, a statue of Karunanidhi should not be erected in the area."
