Coimbatore: Cracking down on illegal operation of brick kilns in Coimbatore's Thadagam Valley, the Madras High Court on February 9 ordered the State to take immediate measures to shutdown operations of illegal brick kilns.

However, citing the HC order the activists in the region who are fighting for the cause have alleged that no action has been initiated, till date and to the contrary smuggling of sand has increased in the region, since the order.

Ganesh, an activist based in Thadagam in Coimbatore, who filed an RTI seeking reply on the illegal sand mining and operation of brick kilns without license has planned to move to the Court against the concerned officials for allegedly failing to act on the HC order.

Throwing light on the order and the alleged inaction by the government, the activist said that on February 9, 2021 Madras High Court issued an order directing District Collector of Coimbatore and other officials to immediately close illegal brick kilns functioning in Thadagam valley, here.

Activist Ganesh alleged that illegal mining of sand in and around Thadagam valley is happening in close to 9,500 acres of land. He further alleged that the number of vehicles plying this route with bricks have substantially increased, since the Court order dated February 9.

He questioned why the District Collector, Coimbatore North Tahshildar, Assistant Director of Mines Department, and VAO’s have not initiated any action of the court order. Even after the operation of illegal brick kilns in the Thadagam area has been explicitly proved in the court of law, any amount of delay in executing the order can only be considered as contempt of court, he added.

When Simplicity contacted Ramesh, AD, Mines department, and questioned about the same. The official replied that they are yet to receive any official order regarding action on the brick kilns. He added that upon directives from the District Collector, necessary arrangements and due process will be followed by concerned departments.

Ane, multiple attempts to reach Coimbatore North Tahsildhar and VAO failed.
