Sanitation workers petition at Coimbatore Commissioner office to Stop Manual Scavenging

Sanitation workers who had been forced to vacate from the city along with Ambedkar Sanitary Workers Union filed a petition with the City Corporation Commissioner.

Coimbatore: Sanitation workers who had been forced to vacate from the city along with Ambedkar Sanitary Workers Union filed a petition with the Coimbatore City Corporation Commissioner.

In the petition they requested the officials to allocate houses inside the Coimbatore City for over 270 people from the backward communities who were forced to vacate due to various bridge constructions in the city.

Members then requested the officials to put an end to Manual Scavenging in Coimbatore by installing new machines. They also requested the officials to send back the 325 sanitation workers who were recruited to work at the sanitation department.

The workers complained that the government has been delaying the requests made by the sanitation workers and said that no one cares about the health issues that affect a sanitation worker because of manual scavenging.

They also said that their salaries only cover the transportation cost which leaves them with no food. The workers requested the government to take immediate actions regarding the sanitation workers community as they don't are not even treated with equal respect.

In the petition the workers requested the Commissioner to provide safety gears and other amenities like soaps etc to the workers. They also requested the officials to give job opportunities to people from the backward communities than people who are overqualified.
