Coimbatore: Over 100 sanitary workers on Tuesday staged a sit-in-protest in front of Corporation office highlighting their long-pending demands including permanent jobs for those who have worked over 10 years for the civic body.

The agitation was staged on behalf of Dr. Ambedkar State Corporation and Municipal Sanitary Workers Social Justice Union. The contractual sanitary workers alleged that they are deprived of all other social security benefits that are available to a permanent employee such as paid leave, gratuity, bonus, medical facilities and retirement benefits.

The following are the demands putforth by the protesting union members:
- Contract staff who have been working for over 10 years should be made permanent.
- On basis of qualification, sanitary staff should be awarded timely promotions.
- 325 employees who were appointed for cleaning work and then used for various other works should be reassigned to same work.
- Families of the sanitary workers who were evicted from CMC colony should be provided houses in the same place.

The agitation caused a stir at the Corporation office premises for a brief time.
