Various associations across the city demand declaration of Pollachi as a separate district.
Coimbatore: Pollachi Municipality is about 100 years old and it is currently a special status municipality. Pollachi Municipality is the center of four taluks including Anaimalai, Udumalai, Valparai and Kinathukadavu. There are more than 700 coir mills located in and around Pollachi.
Many exports of coconut fiber and coconut based value added products happen from here to many countries. The Government of Tamil Nadu has declared Mayiladuthurai as a sparsely populated district. But it is a pity that Pollachi, which has twice the population, has not yet been declared a district and if Pollachi is made a district, there is a possibility of further industrial progress. The reluctance of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in this regard has caused disappointment among the people of the area.
Residents of Pollachi, Valparai, Anaimalai and Kinathukadavu have to travel 50 to 70 km to meet the Coimbatore District Collector and file a petition if they have any problems. Similarly, the people of Udumalai and Madathukulam areas near Pollachi have to travel long distances to Tirupur district to meet the District Collector. Public opine that if Pollachi is declared as a district, the public can avoid such troubles and that many good projects will be implemented for the benefit of the people.

All traders' associations, the Chamber of Commerce and the public in Pollachi and the surrounding villages have put up placards emphasizing the need to make Pollachi a district.
