Elephant Rejuvenation Camp inaugurated by Minister SP Velumani and Minister Dindugal Srinivasan


Coimbatore: The Elephants Rejuvenation Camp is conducted annually on behalf of the Department of Hindu Religious and Charitable Trust of the Government of Tamil Nadu to rejuvenate elephants belonging to temples and mutts in Tamil Nadu.

This year too the camp was organized on 5 acres of land near the Mettupalayam Vanabadrakaliamman temple in Coimbatore distri in Thekkampatti close to Bhavani river. The camp will be held for 48 days from yesterday to next month (March 23).

Elephants from 23 temples and mutts were brought safely in lorries to the campsite from the day before yesterday to attend the camp. On the eve of the opening ceremony of the camp, the mahouts bathed all the elephants yesterday evening, clad them in silk and lined them up.



Later, the elephants were given their favorite food, sugarcane, pineapple, apple, banana, barley, and along with nutrient tablets.



The camp was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious Affairs Minister Sevoor Ramachandran, Minister SP Velumani and Forest Minister Dindugal Srinivasan. In addition, a 7-member veterinary team has been appointed to examine the elephants and provide medicine and pills. Later, Minister Sevoor Ramachandran presented apples, pineapples, oranges and sugarcane to the temple elephant. Following that, Minister SP Velumani and Collector K. Rajamani distributed fruits to the elephants.

The ministers and officials visited the kitchen, where the food was prepared and served to the elephants, as well as inspected the nutritional supplements and pills. All the elephants which attended this camp were seen to be enthusiastic.. The sight of a few elephants hugging their trunks in joy at seeing their fellow elephants after a long day amused the spectators.
