Over 1000 bulls and 900 bull tamers are expected to participate this year - Minister SP Velumani

Jallikattu competitions have been held in Coimbatore every year since 2018 to mark the harvest festival “Pongal”. For the 4th year in a row, the Jallikattu competition is scheduled to be held near the Neelambur Bypass Road next to Chettipalayam on February 21stthis year.

Rural Development and Municipal Administration Minister SP Velumani today inaugurated special poojas at the competition venue.

After that Minister SP Velumani laid the foundation stone and inaugurated the works for the upcoming tournament.

Following this, Minister SP Velumani told reporters that “the Jallikattu tournament is scheduled to be held on the 21st of Februaryin Coimbatore by following the government criteria for COVID -19 protection. The Tamilnadu government is proud to revive our tradition. This is the 4th time that the District Administration in Coimbatore has hosted Jallikattu.



In 2018, around 445 bulls and 323 cowherds participated in the event. In 2019, around 746 bulls, 599 cowherds participated and in the year 2020, over 940 bulls and 645 cowherds participated in the event. The number of bulls and riders participating in this competition is increasing every year.”

Minister SP Velumani then stated that “The winners of this year’s Jallikattu tournament will be given a Maruti car. Gold coins will be given for the bulls along with other gifts like bicycles,and cash prizes. Over 1000 bulls and 900 cowherds will attend the Jallikattu tournament this year and around 5 lakh people are expected to visit the games.

Around 18 teams will be on behalf of the Department of Animal Husbandry and 12 teams on behalf of the Public Health Department will be at the venue to treat the bulls and participants. Players will be allowed to compete only for conducting proper tests.”

Tamilnadu Rural Development and Municipal Administration Minister SP Velumani then said that “A special venue will be set for the spectators and said that the entire venue will be tightly monitored with CCTV cameras.”

Minister SP Velumani then thanked Chief Minister Edapadi Palanisamy on behalf of the Jallikattu Association and the people of Coimbatore for waiving the Rs. 12,000 crore loan of the farmers.
