Tribals request District Collector to replace Karunya Nagar to Nallur Vayal in their Aadhar card

Coimbatore: The tribal people yesterday filed a petition with the Collector seeking the removal of the name Karunya Nagar from government documents including the voter ID card and Aadhar and renaming it as Nallur Vayal.

In the petition it was stated that they have been living in Nallur Vayal Village, Mathvarayapuram Panchayat, Coimbatore District for many years. In 1986, Karunya College started functioning in Nallur Vayal. Back then the only place was a street called Karunya Nagar. Even now, it remains the same in government gazettes.

They added that by the power of the Karunya administration, they changed the traditional name of their town over time. In 1992, the post office under the Central Government was renamed as Karunya Nagar. Following this the name of the village Nallurvayal was changed to Karunya Nagar. It is mentioned as Karunya Nagar in all the villagers' Aadhar, driving license, ration card and voter card.

They said that Karunya Nagar is mentioned in Public Sector Bank, Government Transport Department Office, BSNL, Police Station and the existing Electricity Board. They said they have lost the identity of the village and the traditional name of Nalluvayal should be mentioned everywhere and all government identity cards should be changed.

The villagers met District Collector K. Rajamani directly and submitted the petition and expressed their grievances.
