Devotees in fear as elephants encamp at Marudhamalai Murugan Temple
Coimbatore: Devotees were in fear as a herd of elephants camped at Marudhamalai Murugan Temple yesterday. A herd ofelephants encamped close to the stairways at the foot of the Marudhamalai Murugan Temple. So the public and devotees in the area fled in fear.
Devotees visit the Maruthamalai Subramaniya Swamy Temple from the foothills via stairs and road. At 2:00 pm yesterday, a herd of elephants with female elephants and a cub came close to the stairways. Devotees who passed by, immediately informed the forest department.
Upon information, forest officers stopped the pilgrims from coming to the temple from the foothills via stairs and road as they tried to drive the wild elephants back into the forest. The wild elephants camped in the pit between the stairs and the road. After about 1.5 hours of struggle the forest officials chased the wild elephants back into the forest. With the onset of summer, the migration of wild elephants is expected to be high. Therefore, the forest department has asked the devotees to be careful on the stairs and roads.
The forest department has warned devotees who come to the temple and those who have set up shops on the road side to be very careful. He said the wild elephants continue to move on the foothills. The forest department also warned the public to be vigilant.
