Motorists complain of inordinate delay in Kavundampalayam flyover works and traffic congestion
Coimbatore: Motorists complaint of inordinate delay in Kavundampalayam flyover works and traffic congestion. Construction of 1.20 km long and 17.20 m wide flyover at a cost of Rs. 66 crore from Housing Unit to Ramasamy Wedding Hall at Mettupalayam Road, Coimbatore and construction of 0.60 km long and 17.20 km wide flyover at GN Mill junction at a cost of Rs. 41.88 crore was started in March last year.
Traffic Diversion
Due to the bridge works, the traffic congestion on Mettupalayam Road increased in the morning and evening. The first traffic change was announced on January 8 and buses and cars were diverted on Mettupalayam Road.
Crisis continues
Due to the change in traffic, there was heavy traffic congestion in the areas including Vellakkinar, Thudiyalur and Kanuvai. The traffic was diverted to speed up the completion of the flyover.
Meanwhile, work on the Kavundampalayam flyover is still going at a slow pace despite the traffic diversion. Due to the alternative route, people have been pushed into additional crises due to traffic congestion, commuting up to 10 km in alternative roads that are filled with potholes making the motorists severely dissatisfied.
Slow progress in work
Motorists say, "The roads are completely dug for overpass works. Only two-wheelers are allowed on the road. But, the road is completely damaged causing increased dust and vehicles are getting stuck in potholes. Works are progressing in a slow pace and damaged roads need to be repaired. Roads in the area are also bumpy and potholed as no pre-arrangements have been made for the alternative route."
Problems in alternative routes
Due to the change in traffic a large number of vehicles are passing through on the Thadagam Road in Coimbatore. Tarred roads have recently been dug on the Thadagam road from Venkitapuram area to Edayarpalayam for underground sewerage work and various other works. The area where the sewers were opened were hastily repaired. The road is bumpy and potholed in various places and minor accidents are still going on.
There are a large number of small and micro enterprises operating in the Edayarpalayam area. They are also using this road and this has affected not only the public but also entrepreneurs.
TACT President James said, "All vehicles passing through Mettupalayam Road have been diverted to Thadagam Road due to overpass work. Two-wheelers and area residents have been forced to go on the sides due to the speeding vehicles. Many people on two-wheelers are increasingly falling and getting injured due to poor road conditions. Immediate action should be taken to level and widen the roads from Venkitapuram to Edayarpalayam. We need to protect people from accidents."
