Child marriage in Coimbatore temples: Department of Social Welfare warns Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department
Coimbatore: The Department of Social Welfare has issued a notice to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department warning that child marriage in temples around Coimbatore should be allowed only after the temple administration verifies the age proof certificate. As a precautionary measure against child marriage, the Department of Social Welfare has recommended to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department to compulsorily inspect the age certificate in temples. Child marriage prevention and awareness work is being carried out actively in Coimbatore. Committees have been set up at the panchayat level and monitoring has been intensified. Usually child marriage are on the high during Thai maasam. This year 3 complaints have been received so far in January and all of which have been put on hold.
The Social Welfare Department has received complaints that child marriages are conducted in temples. Following this, social welfare officers have been involved in taking appropriate action and monitoring the temples.
Social Welfare Officer Thangamani said, “There is a good deal of awareness about child marriage in Coimbatore. At the panchayat level, groups are constantly monitoring and raising awareness. Appropriate instructions have been issued to the Hindu Charities Trust Department to prevent child marriage in temples. It has been recommended that the resolution not to conduct child marriage in temples and the age certificate must be examined and only then marriage should be allowed."
