Coimbatore: Over 5000 people from the Varapatti village in Sultanpet Zone, Sulur are mainly involved in agriculture cultivating coconut trees and animal rearing like poultry etc.
Over the last 20 years a Bangalore based private company called Dynamite Technology has their wind farms set-up in the locality.
With the company being shut down, the government had decided to use the 421 acres of land in the Varapatti village panchayat for establishing SIPCOT Industrial Estate and had released a tender regarding it.

Opposing the plan to establish the SIPCOT Industrial Estate, hundreds of locals from the area met the Coimbatore District Collector and gave a petition regarding it.
Local Farmer Natrajan stated that "In the case of establishing SIPCOT Industrial Estate in the area, the upcoming tanneries, leather factories and iron industries will pollute the underground water table which will affect the farming lands in the area. Agriculture is the source of livelihood for most people in our area. So the government must relocate the SIPCOT Industrial Estate somewhere else."

Meanwhile today the local public stranded Tamil Perarasu Party General Secretary and Film Director VA Gowthaman who was on his way to Varapatti village and took him to the police station.
He was later let to enter the Varapatti village after police officials convinced the local public.
