Coimbatore: Contract employees working at the Coimbatore Corporation requested the officials to follow the High Court's stay order to hire new workers and make their kind permanent.
Tamilnadu Selvam, General Secretary of Tamilnadu Annal Ambedkar Sanitary Workers Association said that:
"There are about 3865 contract workers in various departments of Coimbatore Corporation from basic Sanitary works to workers involved in abolishing the spread of Malaria and Dengue fevers. These contract employees are with the Coimbatore Corporation for more than 10 years. Meanwhile these workers should be given salaries like permanent employees."
"Meanwhile members of Annal Ambedkar Sanitary Workers Union, Jeeva Sanitation Department Workers Union, Coimbatore Labour Union, AITUC, Janashakti Labour Union jointly met the Coimbatore Labourers Deputy Commissioner and filed a case regarding this.
Meanwhile, Coimbatore Corporation has made an announcement stating that there are 530 vacant positions and workers will be appointed based on reservations.
Post this a case was filed at the Chennai High Court regarding the Corporation Authorities hiring fresh workers when there are contract employees with high experience. The case was investigated and the Chennai High Court ordered the Coimbatore Corporation to conduct the interview but not to grant the vacant positions.
This High Court stay is a temporary victory for the downtrodden people. The Coimbatore Corporation should make the contract employees permanent along with their special schemes."
