Goats and tailoring machines donated to the mentally ill persons who have been rehabilitated by the Udavum Karangal
Coimbatore: Udavum Karangal conducted the Community Outreach Programme on Fridayat its home, Myleripalayam.
In this programme, goats and tailoring machines were freely donated to the mentally ill persons who have been rehabilitated by the Udavum Karangal under the “Parivartan” scheme.
S. Vidyaakar, Founder Secretary, Udavum Karangal presided over the programme and initiated the helping projects. N.K.Velu, Addl. Supdt. of Police (Rtd) and Secretary- Anti Corruption Movement, Coimbatore was the Chief Guest distributed the tailoring machines and goats to the rehabilitated mentally retarded people along with the Guests of Honour Dr.S.Manoharan, Dental Surgeon, Pollachi, Dr.A.Alagarsamy, Head, Department of Social Work, Sri Krishna Arts and Science College, Coimbatore, Mr.R.Sundar, District Child Protection Officer, Coimbatore and Dr.K.Venkatesh Kumar, Assistant Professor and Consultant Psychiatrist, Mind Vision, Tirupur.
Under the Community empowerment programme, Udavum Karangal, Coimbatore, has implemented a Project named “PARIVARTAN’’ [means “TRANSFORMATION”].It is a community mental health initiative in rural Coimbatore, where a team of Social Workers, medical and paramedical staff visit villages and make a survey to identify persons not only with mental ill-health but also other major diseases and issues faced by the poor.The identified families are being provided with guidance, counselling and are brought for psychiatric examination.They are consulted by a Psychiatrist and are provided with free medicines.
The staff of PARIVARTAN do periodic home visits and follow ups.The uniqueness of Parivartan is that it takes Psychiatric treatment to the door step of the rural poor. In the I phase, this Project was undertaken in the villages in and around Coimbatore and in the II phase it has been extended to the Nilgiris District for the benefit of the tribal community like Todas, Badagas, Kotas, Kurumbasand Irulas, living in forest areas where there is a superstition and stigma about mental illness.Parivartan has brought about transformation and hope in these families.
Under the Parivartan scheme, Udavum Karangal had distributed the Goats and Tailoring machines to the recovered / rehabilitated mentally ill patients / family members of Coimbatore in order to give them an opportunity to earn their livelihood.They were given a pair of Goats (male and female) free of cost for rearing, multiplying and selling it for benefit and thereby earn income and become self-reliant.Similarly, the tailoring machines would help them earn their living and stand on their own legs. The expected impact is to empower the rehabilitated mentally ill patients by giving them an opportunity to earn their livelihood which provides them a valid ground to gain the respect not only from their family members but also in the society.
