Coimbatore: Farmers in and around Pollachi and Anamalai in Coimbatore are involved in coconut and paddy farming.
Farmers complain that the coconut trees which are grown for tender coconuts and raw coconuts are recently being affected by a certain variety of white fly.
To fight this, the Agricultural Department along with Coconut Research Center are providing the farmers with various techniques and steps.
Some of the steps include tying of yellow polythene bags in between the coconut trees and applying lamp oil on them to trap the flies, watering the trees with high pressure water, killing the flies with traps and many more. Government officials are enforcing the farmers to such methods to prevent their trees from being attacked.
Moreover, farmers in the areas of Anamalai, Angalakuruchi, Vettaikaranpudur and Kaliyapuram have started to use the methods and various procedures taught by the agricultural department to ward off white flies.
Anamalai Agricultural Department Officials said that "Tamilnadu government has arranged for 2 1/2 acres ofyellow colour papers, Chrysoperla predator, lamp oil and other machines which is worthed of rupees 1,300 to control the white flies affecting the coconut trees.
Also Rs 1000 is given to control the white flies using high irrigation hose pipes. So far farmers in Anamalai area are given various tools to eliminate white flies around 8000 hectares."
He further added that " If farmers follow these measures, coconut trees will survive about 60% of the attacks."
