Forest department renamed the Aliyar Monkey Falls as Kaviyaruvi


Coimbatore: Forest department has renamed the Azhiyar Monkey Falls as Kaviyaruvi. Azhiyar Monkey Falls is a major tourist attraction in Pollachi. It is a popular tourist destination visited not only by local tourists but also tourists from various districts and other states. For the last few months, the Forest Department has been carrying out maintenance work at the Monkey Falls.

It contained inscriptions on monkeys in particular and poems on monkeys in Sanskrit literature. Colorful paintings and sculptures are carved to attract tourists and has been known as Monkey Falls for many years.



Now the waterfall has been renamed as Kaviyaruvi and a notice board has been put up on behalf of the forest department.

Forest officials said the monkeys have a name of 'Kavi' in Sangam literature. Poets have given hints about monkeys in many songs. Currently Monkey Falls is being modernized with basic amenities. They also said that the waterfall has been named as a Kaviyaruvi for it to be attractive amongst tourists.
