DMK members protest against 10-year delay of overbridge work Thaneerpandal Road: Over 500 arrested

A government order was sanctioned in the year 2010 by then Chief Minister Karunanidhi towards the construction of a railway over bridge in the Hope College - Thaneerpandal area under a budget of 12 crores.

Coimbatore: A government order was sanctioned in the year 2010 by then Chief Minister Karunanidhi towards the construction of a railway over bridge in the Hope College - Thaneerpandal area under a budget of Rs 12 crores.

But even after 10 years, only 10% of the project has been completed. Due to this over 50,000 residents in the area are forced to travel around for over 2 kms even during unavoidable emergencies.

Coimbatore DMK East Secretary Karthick N organised a demonstration at the Thaneerpandal road urging the government to complete this project immediately.

Peelamedu 1st Part representative Balasubramaniam, Ward Secretaries AS Natrajan and SRKP Kannan took part in this demonstration carrying placards requesting the government to complete the project immediately.

After this DMK MLA Karthik addressed the media and said that "this overbridge project was initiated by DMK leader Kalaingar Karunanidhi 10 years ago. With only 10% of the project being completed, AIADMK government has shelved this project for about 10 years now. Railway department has completed the bridge works from their side and the bridge is being incomplete because of the delay caused by the AIADMK government.

This is continuously causing grave tension to the area residents who are traveling 2kms extra even during unavoidable emergencies."

DMK MLA Karthik then said that Coimbatore has numerous projects like these which remain shelved. He then said that " Chief Minister Edapadi Palanisamy has the highway ministry in his hands and even then has not completed the project nor make any announcements about it during his visit to Coimbatore."

DMK East Secretary Karthick N then said that a public protest will happen immediately if the government continues to ignore the plight of the residents.

Over 500 DMK officials like P Nachimuthu, Metal M Mani, N Udhaiyakumar, Advocate Rajendran, Kottai Abbas, Singai Prabagaran, Meena Jayakumar, Kalpana Senthil and various other DMK district, zonal and ward members took part in the demonstration along with general public.

Coimbatore Police Officials arrested around 700 members for participating in this demonstration as it did not have the permission.
