Over 40% of the construction works completed at the unified bus stand in Vellalore says corporation official.
Coimbatore: Coimbatore has 5 major bus stands such as Gandhipuram town bus stand, Central bus stand, Thiruvalluvar Bus stand and Singanallur bus stand.
Buses to Tirupur, Erode and Namakkal start from the Central bus stand and busses to Madurai, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and other southern cities depart from the Singanallur bus stand.
With the city's continuous expansion and development projects, traffic in Coimbatore was uncontrollable. Due to this Coimbatore corporation officials decided to build an unified bus stand 3 years ago at Vellalore under an estimated budget of ₹172 crores.
Over 50 acres of land in Vellalore was chosen and a survey was made. After the assessment, the corporation officials proposed a new unified bus stand at an area of 61.62 acres with a budget of ₹202 crores.
Later the project was shelved by the state government due to insufficient budget and various other reasons, which delayed the execution of this project.
However, Tamilnadu Chief Minister Edapadi K Palanisamy later announced that the integrated bus stand will be built at Vellalore as planned under a budget of ₹178 crores. After this announcement, the construction work for the new bus stand commenced last January.
This new bus stand in Vellalore is built in a land of 30 acres with the entrance of the bus stand at Chettipalayam. Also the lorry pettai currently operating in Ukkadam was also decided to be moved to this new bus stand when it's completed. The space for lorries at the new bus stand will have its entrance at the Cochin Bypass road which is expected to help the traffic in Ukkadam.
The new bus stand in Vellalore is estimated to facilitate 140 buses at the same time with other facilities like a shopping complex, restaurants and advertisement hoardings. It was also said that the revenue generated from these will be used in the maintenance of the bus stand. The bus stand will also facilitate local bus services, Mofussil bus services and Omni bus services.
"Work at the Vellalore bus stand are being carried out at a high pace. Pandemic has delayed the progress of the construction but the work has now resumed with the end of lockdown. Around 40% of the work has been completed and the remaining work at the new integrates bus stand will be completed soon", said a corporation official.
