Coimbatore: New Delhi police on republic day fired tear gas at the protesting farmers after they broke through barricades and stormed the historic Red Fort, waving farm union flags from the fort's ramparts.
Strongly condemning the act by the police, Thol Thirumavalavan, Party head of Vidudhalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) in a press meet in Coimbatore airport on Tuesday urged that the centre should immediately repeal the controversial farm laws which are against the interest of the farmers.
Recallling the historic protest by farmers who descended on India's capital on Tuesday, driving in long lines of tractors to demonstrate against agricultural reforms proposed by PM Modi's government, the VCK President questioned if internet services were pulled down in the capital to avoid exposing the unjust meted out on the farmers.
Commenting on the long-pending of release of Perarivalan and other convicts involved in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case who have served more than their sentenced period, Thol.Thirumavalavan hoped that the Governor will make a fair decision based on the Supreme Court order regarding their release.
The VCK President was here in the city to attend the wedding reception of former AIADMK Minister KC Palanisamy's daughter in Echanari, here.
