P Subramanian, Founder of Shanthi Gears and Shanthi Social Service from Coimbatore to be honoured with Padma shri, posthumously.
P Subramanian, the Founder of Shanthi Gears and Shanthi Social Service who passed away in December, 2020, has been conferred with Padma Shri award.
Popularly known as the ‘Gear man of Coimbatore’, Subramaniam passed at the age of 78 due to prolonged illness in Coimbatore. A great Philantrophist, he has helped thousands of underprivileged people and children through his NGO Shanthi Social Service by providing free education, school buildings, subsidised food and more.
He has now been conferred with Padma Shri award, posthumously, the fourth-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan. It is awarded by the Government of India every year on India's Republic Day.
The Ministry of Home Affairs on the eve of Republic Day (January 25) announced the list of Padma awardees for 2021 given for excellence in disciplines such as art, social work, public affairs, sports, etc.
President Ram Nath Kovind has approved conferment of 119 Padma Awards - seven Padma Vibhushan, 10 Padma Bhushan and 102 Padma Shri.
