Coimbatore: In a bid to build an ecosystem for Automotive Electronics Research and Development, Coimbatore Institute of Engineering and Technology (CIET) in association with ANCIT is launching CIET Automotive Research Studio (CARS) - India’s first Automotive Protocol Research Centre in Coimbatore.
CARS will be an industry institute partnership cell bringing together researchers, students, industry, government and the community to build an ecosystem for Automotive Electronics Research and Development, says Dr.B. Karthick, CEO, CIET Technology business incubator.
CARS will be inaugurated by Srikanth KV, DGM, Ather Energy on January 27 at 3 PM via online.
Dr.Chinnaraju, Director- CIET, will preside over the function in the presence of key functionaries from CIET, ANCIT teams, students and various other stakeholders of the industry.
4.7 Billion dollar industry
Briefing on the CARS initiative and the industry, Mr Karthik says that the Automotive Electronics Industry is a 4.7 Billion dollar industry growing at a CAGR of 4.7%.The Automotive Electronics Industry is a 4.7 Billion dollar industry growing at a CAGR of 4.7%.
Within only a few years, the share of software-controlled innovations in the automotive industry has increased from 20 percent to 80 percent, and is still growing. Forecasts claim that software will determine more than 90% of the functionality of automotive systems within the next decade, he added.
Consequently, the impact of software on the customer and hence on market shares and competition will be enormous. This establishes software as a key technology in the automotive domain, he added.
Role of CARS
CARS will be a unique facility with entire set of tools and hardware required to build and test the software associated with Automotive Electronics. CARS shall support educational experiences for students, infrastructure for research and events that will bring students and campus researchers together with industry professionals and the broader community.
Objective of CARS
To create awareness among engineers, companies like HCL, Bosch, Tata that are looking build software for the automotive industry electronics control unit for cars. Such companies can use students to build them and provide opportunities in the same field.
CARS will also ensure that it will produce high quality engineers who can be readily deployed in the industry
Citing lack of awareness about automotive Electronic Research and Development in Tamil Nadu when compared to Andhra Pradesh, Mr Karthik believes lack of interest,knowledge and awareness among fresh graduates and engineering students are the possible reasons, for the same.
"Our aim is also to reach students through webinar’s and provide them the opportunity to build their career in the same. Many companies like HCL, Tata, Bosch are looking out for such talents in the field", he added.
Throwing light on the cost-effectiveness of the program, Mr Karthik said cost of the tools is one of the major challenge, as each product has multitude of tools and the cost will vary accordingly. However, with the help of ANCIT, we at CIET, India’s first automotive research and development studio, will be able to provide resources, he assured.
“ANCIT will provide tools to the research studio.They are looking for engineering resources and product development centres from which they can build the product and manpower together", he said.
Meanwhile, the CARS team will also be working closely with numerous OEMs and TIER 1 companies to build cost effective tools for ECU development and testing, creating unique opportunity for industry to explore collaboration with students to build PoCs for some of their future ideas.
