Mentality to vote only for a single party is slavery: Kamal Hassan on National Voters Day
On the occasion on National Voter's Day Kamala Hassan said that the mentality to vote for a single party is one way a form slavery.
In his press release Kamal Hassan said,
"Democracy means people's participation and it starts with voting. The world watched India's first general election. The question of the world was how this country, which is spread by thousands of differences in religion, language, caste and culture, is going to face democracy. Various challenges awaited the Election Commission in that election. It was a time when infrastructure, roads and transport facilities were not improved. Ballot boxes were transported to many places by boat and ox carts. Ballot boxes were unloaded by helicopter in some hilly villages. But a bigger challenge awaited than that.
Many of the ethnic groups in India at that time did not have separate names. Except for those who were known as a group, there were no personal names for themselves. At most, the symbol will be Nettaiyan, Kuttaiyan and Karuppan. History has it that the Election Commission gave each of them a unique name and cast their vote. It was democracy that first created the status, power and importance of individuals in India. Even after all this even today many of us do not feel like a free man. Many vote for the candidate of their caste, for the candidate who tax pays tax to the temple, for the party they have been supporting for generations. This attitude is driven by their community and is almost like slavery.
Without considering Who is the candidate? What is his qualification? What was his career? Has he lived as a virtuous man in the past? Are his words and deeds the same? What are his plans for development? and may other aspects voting based on caste, religion and political identities is nothing but an act of overthrowing democracy. Do not consider their caste and vote just look at the achiever.
The corrupt politician thinks about his family and amasses property for at least ten generations. He also brings his heirs into politics to protect the added assets. When a corrupt politician thinks about his family, why don't you think about your family and your descendants?
We have a historic duty to reorganize this Tamil Nadu and pass it on to our descendants without any blemish. If we fail to do that, the future will never forgive us. Let's get together on the election day and win."
