Chairman of “Chennai Hospital” fighting a legal battle with land owners Ellen Hospital killed by a speeding car in Coimbatore

Chennai Hospital Chairman Dr Umashankar was killed in an accident today near Kannapa Nagar. Dr. Uma Shankar was known to have involvement in the land acquisition case .


Coimbatore: Chennai Hospital Chairman Dr Umashankar was killed in an accident today near Kannapa Nagar. Dr. Uma Shankar was fighting a legal battle against his land owners for control of his leased space.

Dr. Ramachandran (72) is the founder of Ellen Hospital in Gandhipuram, Coimbatore. It is said that Dr. Uma Shankar (54) contacted Dr. Ramachandran around 3 years ago and told his interest about opening a new branch of “Chennai Hospital” in Coimbatore.

Dr. Ramachandran who was old and had an aging hospital in his hand decided to rent Ellen hospital building to Chennai Hospital. Dr. Uma Shankar agreed on paying a rent of 15 lakhs per month, 10% extra rent every year and a GST of 18%.

For this an agreement was made in 2017 for a period of 10 years. It is said that Dr. Uma Shankar paid Rs 1 crore as advance amount. It is said that Dr. Uma Shankar also agreed to allocate a private consulting room for Dr. Ramachandran as he is a veteran doctor in the area.

After this Ellen Hospital was changed into Chennai Hospital. The owners alleged that Dr. Uma Shankar failed to pay the rent as agreed. It is said that Dr. Uma Shankar refused to pay the rent for over 3 years and Dr. Ramachandran was forced to pay GST of 18%.

Dr. Ramachandran asked Dr. Uma Shankar to pay the balance rent of Rs. 4,95,71,000 and it is alleged that Dr. Uma Shankar tried to sublease the hospital building. When Dr. Ramachandran enquired about this, it is said that Dr. Uma Shankar along with Chennai Hospital Manager Marudavanan threatened him.

After this Dr. Ramachandran filed a complaint at the Coimbatore District Crime branch against Dr. Uma Shankar regarding rental issues and requested the officials to help him collect the rental amount of 4.95 crores from Dr. Uma Shankar.

Police officials who investigated the case arrested Dr. Uma Shankar and his assistant Marudavanan in December under 5 sections. Dr. Uma Shankar who was out on bail was ordered to report daily at the Rathinapuri police station.

However, In a tragic incident that happened yesterday, a car hit Dr. Uma Shankar who was walking home after reporting at the Rathinapuri police station. Dr. Uma Shankar who was injured severely died on the spot.

Police officials have recovered the body and are conducting their investigation into multiple angles including murder.
