Coimbatore: In what is told to be the largest inoculation drive against the novel coronavirus, as many as three crore frontline and healthcare workers will receive their first dose of vaccination, today. The State had begun its first phase of vaccination drive today, following the nation-wide drive inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi, today morning.

The PM inaugurated 3,006 vaccination sites across the country through video conference, this morning.

Tamil Nadu has received 5,36,500 doses of Covishield and 20,000 Covaxin doses. Till date, 4.39 lakh healthcare experts and frontline workers have been registered for the inoculation process.

Inaugurating the vaccine drive programme at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH), Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural development and Implementation of special programme, SP Velumani told the media that Coimbatore has got around 40,600 vaccines with 105 cold chain facilities to store it.

Besides CMCH, the vaccination drive have also begun at Mettupalayam GH, Pollachi GH and Nallatipalayam Public Health Care Institute. Each site will inoculate 100 people per day and in the first phase, a total of 400 people are to be inoculated, said the Minister.

The first dose of vaccine was administered to Dr. Kalidas, Dean of CMCH, followed by Dr. Booma, Paediatrician at CMCH. Both of them were inoculated with Covishield, in the presence of Minister and Coimbatore Collector A. Rajamani.

Speaking to Simplicity, Dr. Booma said she was excited to be inoculated and added that this would bring in more trust among patients and others.

Few others including 34 PG students and 37 practising nurses at CMCH are to be inoculated, the Minister noted.

Minister also stressed the importance of follow-up after first dose and advised those inoculated today to take second dose after 27 days.

The vaccine will be administered to people above 18 years of age. Pregnant women, lactating mothers and those unsure of pregnancy have been advised to avoid the vaccination shot. The vaccines are not interchangeable.

Both the vaccine doses have to be administered from the same manufacturer.

While the Central government had clearly listed out fatigue, headache, myalgia, malaise, pyrexia, chills, arthralgia and nausea, as the vaccine side effects, the Minister's assurance on no side effects came as a contradiction.

It is advised by the health experts to avoid consuming alcohol and in take of drugs after getting Covid vaccine shots.

It may be noted that 56,000 people from private hospitals and healthcare institutions in Coimbatore have been registered for the Covid shots.
