Pongal celebrations in Ooty Botanical Gardens: Mayilattam and Thappattam performed
Coimbatore: Pongal celebrations were celebrated despite the rainy and muggy climate in Ooty Botanical Gardens. The celebrations included Mayilattam and Thappattam performances.
As Pongal, the festival of farmers is being celebrated all over Tamil Nadu, the tourist places in Ooty, Botanical Gardens celebrated the Pongal festival participated by the tribals, tourists, gardeners and tour guides including Todas and Badugas who live in the Nilgiris.

Nilgiris District Collector Innocent Divya and District Superintendent of Police Sasimohan also participated in the Pongal celebrations which featured folk art performances such as Thappattam and Mayilattam as well as traditional Tamil sports.


The District Collector also enthusiastically participated and enjoyed with the tourists during the celebrations. District Collector Innocent Divya, speaking to the reporters said, "There is no restriction on visiting tourist places in Ooty. Tourists must follow social distancing and wear face masks while exploring the tourist spots. Violators will be fined 200 rupees for not wearing a face mask."
District Collector Innocent Divya has warned hotel and resort owners that their licenses will be revoked if tourists stay in hotels without wearing a face mask.
