Merchants protest against demolition of old Poo market complex in Coimbatore: Stir caused as police deployed for security

Coimbatore: Merchants protest against demolition of old Poo market complex in Coimbatore: There is a stir in the area as police are deployed for security. There are more than 140 wholesale and retail outlets in Poo market, which operates in Coimbatore. More than 20 tons of flowers are brought to this market daily from Sathyamangalam, Sirumugai, Bangalore, Nilgiris, Dindigul and Pollachi.

The Poo market complex has been closed since March 25, 2020 due to the Coronavirus lockdown. As a result, the shops that used to operate here were temporarily relocated to the Devanga School grounds on Brooke Bond Road. The shops are being operated here until now.

The construction of 95 new shops at a cost of Rs 70 lakh at the Corporation Poo market premises at RS Puram, Mettupalayam Road, Coimbatore, started in May last year. 99 percent of these works completed and it was announced that new shops would be allotted to merchants through auction. But work has not yet begun. The corporation administration is planning to demolish the old premises of Poo market and build new shops there. Following this, the corporation officials came today with a JCB machine to demolish the old premises.

The flower traders besieged the JCB machine in protest of the demolition of the old Poo market premises as the new flower market complex was not open and the shops there were not allotted for traders. This caused a stir in the area.

Corporation official said, “The 95 newly constructed shops in the RS Puram Corporation flower shop complex will soon be allotted to traders through auction. The auction will be held soon. The old flower market will also be completely renovated and will be allotted to traders."
