6 arrested for hijacking a car and robbing Rs. 27 lakhs at knifepoint in Coimbatore
Coimbatore: Six men were arrested for hijacking a car and robbing Rs. 27 lakhs at knifepoint in Coimbatore. According to the police, Abdul Salam, a real estate business man from Malappuram, Kerala, drove from Bangalore to Kerala via Coimbatore on the 25th of last month. The car was driven by Samsudeen from Kerala. When they reached Navakkarai, next to Coimbatore, they were robbed of Rs. 27 lakhs and the car by a gang on the Palakkad highway.
KG Chavadi police have registered a case and are searching for the unidentified gang. Meanwhile, the day after the incident the stolen car was recovered near Madampatti. When the car was searched, police found secret compartments set up and money stashed away. Police recovered Rs 90 lakh from the car and investigation also revealed that the money was hawala money.
Police interrogated Abdul Salam and his car driver Samsuddin. He was produced in court, a confession was obtained and he was released. Four special teams led by 4 sub-inspectors, 4 inspectors including Madukkarai Inspector Murugesan, were set up under the supervision of DSP Srinivasan to nab the unidentified gang that continued to loot money. Police received a tip-off that the gang was in the Madukkarai Megacity area.
Unnikumar (44), a resident of Pillaiyarpuram, was arrested by the police who rushed to the spot. 1.5 lakh was confiscated from him and he was sent to jail. Investigations revealed that 5 more people were in Kerala. Police immediately rushed to the spot and arrested five persons including the main culprits Santosh, Sandeep, Shobin, Radhakrishnan and Sreejith.
