Coimbatore: Social activists and the local public of Thadagam area are complaining as the police officials have filed a complaint against them for fighting against brick manufacturers.

The area public and social activists who are fighting against the illegal mining of red sand by the brick manufacturers were beaten up by the industrialists.

It is said that the police officials have filed a case against the activists and people but not against the industrialists who had beaten them up.

Social activists have are complaining that over 200 plus brick making industries are located at the Western ghats area of Coimbatore and a case has been filed against them at the Madras High Court as some manufacturers are involved in stealing red sand for making bricks without getting proper approval from various government organisations like the forestry department, pollution control board, revenue department.

With the Madras High Court's strict standards against stealing mineral resources and an order to file strong cases against the people who are involved, Coimbatore Thasildar had seized about 4 trucks last October which were involved in stealing red sand from Thadagam.

But social activists of the area say that the stealing of red sand for making bricks is still quite frequent and even after continuous complaints against them to the district officers and mineral resources department no actions have been taken against them.

However in the last three months the brick manufacturers had stopped their production due to Covid-19 but since last Sunday over 350 to 400 trucks of red sands have been stolen from the area.

The tribals, locals, farmers union and social activists of the area have planned to go on a one day hunger strike on January 5th against the officials for not taking actions against the industries which are involved in stealing red sand.

With that going on, a truck which stole red sand from the land owned by Maheshwari was stopped by the social activists and a complaint regarding this was made to the north revenue officer and revenue inspector. But no officials arrived at the scene for more than 2 hours.

At the same time over 100 plus brick manufacturers arrived at the scene and started to beat up the social activists named Ganesh and Manikaraj and also attacked Maheshwari.

Locals and social activists have filed a complaint against this incident and it is said that no actions were taken against the brick manufacturers by the officials who arrived late at the scene. It is also said that the social activists were again beaten up by the industrialists at the Thadagam police station but the police officials had taken the social activists inside the police station to keep them safe rather than taking any action against the offenders.

The social activists have also complained that these violent actions by the brick manufacturers are happening because of the government officials not questioning them for stealing red sand illegally. The social activists also asked that will the officials take action only if someone gets killed?
