Wild elephants smash school cars in Valparai
Coimbatore: Wild elephants smash school cars in Valparai. More than 500 workers are employed at the Upper Paralai Estate, next to Valparai in Coimbatore district. 13 wild elephants that suddenly came into the residential area at midnight broke into the school premises and smashed the doors and windows of the canteen and devoured the rice and sugar stored there. The herd also damaged the cars parked near the school and the pickup vanby breaking its windows.

When the residents woke up hearing the noise, they saw wild elephants damaging cars near their residence and informed the forest department. Forest department officials rushed in and chased the wild elephants into the forest. Following this wild elephants were seen standing in the forests near the residential areas which caused fear and panic in the area. So the public in the area have asked to set up electric fences and said they suffer due to insufficient lighting that does not allow them to see if there are elephants approaching. The people of the area have demanded that street lights be set up in the area immediately and that the forest department intensify patrols at night.
